Filling the Void

It's not exactly a secret that Downtown Jacksonville is in need of more creative activity, but what has been done to bring more spirit to the area? We would like to give a little tip o' the hat to the other organizations sharing the mission of The Looking Lab project to revitalize downtown.

Downtown Vision Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to build and maintain a vibrant downtown community while promoting a safe and exciting place to visit, work, and live.  Formed in 2000, DVI has activated over 50 events annually, including the beloved First Wednesday's Art Walk.  In the 2012-2013 fiscal year, approximately 99,400 people came downtown to these events!  In addition, 5 public murals were facilitated.

The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville is a great advocate of the expression of culture and art as an integral part of our community.  Partnered with the City of Jacksonville, the Art in Public Places Program fosters a visual identity to Jacksonville through additions to the urban landscape.  To increase foot traffic and engage pedestrians, the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville is spicing up downtown through the Spark Grant Program.  Not only did this program help make The Looking Lab possible, the 2013 grant help bring these other projects to life: Jenny Hager's Sculpture Walk, Brad Lauretti's Jacksonville Songwriter Residency, and Ian Mairs' Swamp Radio Jax.
